About

One person, one app, and no story to sell you.

Fotocal is made by one person in Madrid. This page says why it exists, who it is for, what it will not do, and how it pays for itself. It has no team photo, no founding legend and no numbers, because none of those would be true.

Why it exists

Almost nobody can see their own eating.

Everyone eats several times a day, every day, and almost nobody has a real picture of what that adds up to. Not for lack of caring. Looking has always been too much work: find the food in a database, guess the portion, confirm, three times a day, until the month you stop.

The usual alternative is to reconstruct it later, in an appointment, from memory. Nobody remembers last Tuesday. So the advice you get is built on a rough guess, and then you wait months and guess again.

Fotocal is one attempt at the obvious fix: make seeing what you eat cost a photo, on the day it happened, so the picture is there while it still matters. That is the whole idea. Not a diet. Not a plan you are meant to follow. Visibility, the ordinary daily kind, that turns "I think I eat pretty well" into something you actually know.

It works with your doctor, not instead of them

Fotocal is a tracking tool. It does not diagnose anything and it is not a treatment. The most useful thing about having your real eating data is that you can take it into an appointment: three months of what you actually ate is a better conversation than a guess about last week. If you have a health concern, see someone, and bring the data.

Who it is for

For people who want to know. Not for everyone.

It is for you if

  • You want to see what you eat without turning dinner into data entry.
  • You would rather have a trend over weeks than a verdict every morning.
  • You want to ask a plain question about your food and get a plain answer, in Spanish or in English.
  • You are fine with an estimate you can correct, rather than a number that pretends to be exact.

It is not the right tool if

  • You are managing an eating disorder, or counting is something you have been told to stay away from. Fotocal counts, and a counter is not what helps there.
  • You need a medical diet supervised by someone. Fotocal is not a medical device and does not replace advice from a doctor or a dietitian.
  • You are under 16. The terms of service ask for that, and it is not a formality.
  • You want an app on iPhone. Fotocal is Android only today, and this site says so on every page rather than hinting otherwise.
What it deliberately does not do

Six things left out on purpose.

Each of these is a choice that cost something, and each one can be checked in the app or on this site rather than taken on trust.

  1. It does not shame you.Miss a day and the app says your streak paused and today is a fresh start. Nothing turns red and nothing is taken away. Progress is shown as a trend over weeks, not a verdict every morning.
  2. It does not promise a rate of loss.No "lose X kilos in Y weeks" anywhere in the app or on this site. Fotocal shows what you are doing; what happens next depends on a great deal that is not an app.
  3. It does not pretend the AI is exact.A photo gives an estimate, not a lab result. Mixed dishes and anything under a sauce are genuinely hard, and every scan can be corrected before it is saved.
  4. It does not show ads. There is no ad code in the app, on any plan. The app is paid for by the subscription and nothing else.
  5. It does not sell your data. The privacy policy says it in one sentence: your personal data is never sold and never used for advertising. Deleting your account is a normal option in the app's settings, and it deletes the data with it.
  6. It does not invent proof. No user counts, no ratings, no press quotes, no awards, no testimonials, on this page or any other. Not modesty: we would rather have none than make some up, and you should not trust a site that does.
How it makes money

The subscription. That is the whole list.

Fotocal is free to use every day, with two daily limits on scanning. Premium lifts those limits and opens the deeper panels, for €6.99 a month or €34.99 a year through Google Play. That is the only money that comes in.

Nothing else pays for it. No ads, no sponsored foods, no data sold to anyone, no "partners". If that ever changed, this page would change first, and the privacy policy would change with it.

The prices, the trial and what each plan includes are on the subscription page, checked against the app's own code.

Who is behind it

One person, in Madrid.

Fotocal is designed, built and answered by one person, working from Madrid. There is no team, no office and no investors. "We" on this site is a voice, not a headcount.

That has real consequences and you should know them. Things move at the pace of one person. Some features you might want do not exist yet. Replies to messages usually take a couple of days, sometimes longer. In return, nobody is pushing to add a dark pattern to hit a quarterly number, and when you write, the person who built the thing is the one who reads it.

See your own eating, starting with the next meal.
